This enzootic disease was first described at the border of England and Wales. It has been found elsewhere in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and North America. It is due to a Pestivirus of the flavirid family, the BVD (Border disease virus), close to that of the mucous membrane disease, which affects sheep, sometimes goats.
