The "splay leg" syndrome affects all terrestrial animals, but is found especially in pigs: it is the major congenital cause of lameness in suckling piglets. It is characterized by a temporarily impaired functionality of the hind leg muscles immediately after birth caused by a myofibrillar hypoplasia, resulting in an abduction of the limbs and inability to stand and walk. Symptoms often improve with growth and adapted nursing. Etiology and pathogenesis is complex and remain still poorly understood.

Le syndrôme "splay leg" touche tous les animaux terrestres, mais se rencontre particulièrement chez le porc : c'est la principale cause de trouble locomoteur chez les porcelets allaités. Il est caractérisé par une altération fonctionnelle temporaire des muscles des pattes arrières liée à une hypoplasie myofibrillaire, et ce juste après la naissance. Ceci provoque une abduction des membres pelviens ainsi qu'une incapacité à se tenir debout ou marcher. Les symptomes régressent souvent avec la croissance et un nursing adapté. L'étiologie et la pathogénie sont complexes et restent aujourd'hui peu connues.
