This term should not be used in a patient with Gingival overgrowth. There are established norms for the timing of eruption in both deciduous and permanent teeth [Garn and Rohmann, [1966]; Lunt and Law, [1974]; McDonald et al. [2004]]. Eruption is defined by the appearance of a tooth that has pierced the gum.
