A substance that is sometimes found in an increased amount in the blood of people who have certain cancers, other diseases, or who smoke. It is used as a tumor marker for colorectal cancer.
The term carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) may refer to the CEA protein family but it is sometimes used to refer to CEACAM5 (carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecule 5) alone., Members of the CEA family consist of a single N domain, with structural similarity to the immunoglobulin variable domains, followed by a variable number of immunoglobulin constant-like A and/or B domains.
