DesignNote

Mucin-16 is a glycoprotein that is synthesized with a single transmembrane domain, and can be proteolytically released from the membrane after intracellular phosphorylation occurs. This protein has been identified as the CA-125 ovarian cancer antigen, which is the basis for a widely used serum assay for the monitoring of patients with ovarian epithelial cancer. This marker cannot detect early ovarian cancer and is not specific enough to be used for population screening. (SwissProt)
