external definition

Interroseous muscles are short digital muscles found together on the plantar aspect of the hindlimb. They act as shock absorbers for the pes, and closely resemble the interossei found in the forelimb. They originate from the proximal ends of all metatarsal bones and initially insert on the sesamoid bones at the metatarsophalangeal joints. The interosseous are then continued by distal sesamoidean ligaments which join the extensor tendons and attach to the phalanges[MURDOCH:920].
